Royal Manor Arts College Heritage Project
Location: Dorset
Following the start of the building of a sports field, many Roman and Iron Age artifacts were found. The community successfully campaigned for the sports field to be relocated so that a full archaeological survey could be carried out; this is the aim of the project. It will involve the community, local organisations and schools in the excavation, recording, processing of finds, publishing of reports and leaflets, off and on the site.
This will be supervised by the Association for Portland Archaeology (APA), using consultants and specialists where required to provide training in the necessary skills. The project aims to explore the site to a degree where it can be determined what the significance of the features and finds are, and to present the information through a variety of media making it accessible for all.
Surveys, data, leaflets, reports, newsletters, lectures, displays, CD’s will help build a picture of the island’s past and the project will involve and train local people of all ages making them more aware of their heritage.
