Town Mill History Project - Workshops
Location: Dorset

As part of the Lyme Regis Town Mill History Project, the three specialist members of the Development Team planned and presented a series of four workshops during Autumn 2003. The aim of the workshops was to foster awareness of the processes involved in the gathering, interpretation and presentation of historical and archaeological information.

The workshops were open to members of the public, mill volunteers and friends of the mill. Because of the need to use locations relevant to the topics under discussion, places were limited to about 12 persons on some workshops and about 25 persons on others. However, the 2003 workshops achieved an overall 80% take-up of available places.

The four workshops in the Autumn 2003 series were: Archaeology of the Town Mill, Researching Historical Records, the Mill History and Function and Displaying Historical Records. Reports on these workshops can be found on the Town Mill Progress Reports page, which precedes this page.

9 July 2004
Archaeological Tour of the Town Mill
Venue: Town Mill, Lyme Regis

As a direct result of the success of the History Project workshops in 2003, Alan Graham has organised two tours of the mill, the last of which is on the 9th July 2004.

The tour, which start at 11.00am and last three hours, focusses on an archaeologist's examination and recording of a building from first encounter to understanding, reporting and eventual publication of findings.

There has been publicity for both these tours of the Town Mill in the newsletter of the Dorset Industrial Archaeology Society and the Dorset County Council’s 'Dorset Archaeological Days 2004', which has a mailing list of over 900 including museums and educational institutions.
