Brunel 200: Stroud
Location: Gloucestershire
Brunel is an important figure in Stroud as the creator and engineer of the Swindon to Cheltenham line designing all the viaducts, bridges, stations and buildings. It is the 200th anniversary of his birth in 2006 and this project will be part of the wider celebrations of the South West.
The aim is to involve the community in researching the story of his work in the Stroud Valleys and by making the information available to the wider community in a variety of ways which will increase awareness of the importance of his work in the wider economic development of Stroud in the 1800’s.
These include creating an exhibition (to be held in the Brunel Goods Shed in Stroud which is being renovated this year), producing a series of plays and video with local primary schools, creating permanent interpretation boards for the Goods Shed as well as leaflets and a website about ‘Stroud and Brunel’.
This project will lead to a better understanding of the changes that took place in the local countryside to enable the building of the track, the effect of the railway on the local economy and the legacy of Brunel in Victorian Stroud for both visitor and resident.
