Cam Wildlife Heritage Project
Location: Gloucestershire
The project aims to train members of the local community to gather information about the parish’s cultural and natural heritage. It will undertake this through a natural heritage warden scheme to survey and look after stiles, hedgerows, snicket ways (long established walking routes to work by the mill workers of the area used for over 500 years), and other aspects of natural heritage.
The group will also act as guides and sources of information to help raise awareness of Cam’s natural and industrial heritage. Two walks leaflets will be produced, one based on the stiles and the other on the snicket ways.
The community will also work with landowners and the county archaeologist to restore the stone stiles in the area. An Nationwide award is requested to replace ordinary stiles with kissing gates to enable easier access for disabled/those with mobility problems.
The material gathered will be fed into the local biodiversity action plan which will guide much of the care for natural heritage features in the future.
A website will also be created by the Cam’s secondary school to enable all information about the project to be accessed. The project will be well promoted to the wider community via public events, a social evening and a series of talks as well as through the launch of the warden scheme and walks
