Discovering the Cotswolds Canals
Location: Gloucestershire

To research and record the local history of the canal in relation to its environs and make the results of this research available to the community and the many visitors to the canal.

Local people will contribute memories, photographs, and documentation as well as be involved in the creation of 4 interpretation points along a 3 mile stretch of canal. An oral history project with an interactive CD Rom will be produced as will an interactive leaflet/quiz and education pack; these will be launched at a special event.

The canal used to be the lifeblood of the community but now all that is left is scattered stones, broken locks and private memories. By gathering the latter, the human story can be told and will become a key additional feature to the physical restoration of the canal (HLF grant £11.9 mill). It will also provide a focus for the community and an invaluable way of reaching out to people of all ages who use the towpath.

Extensive consultation has already taken place about the canal restoration and concern was raised that whilst it was a good thing, it could become top-down’ and there would be no opportunity for people to be involved, and that local communities would be excluded from participating in making decisions about their local environment. This project aims to redress that concern.
