LHI Project Members visit an old Iron Mine

On 28th July last, leading members of the Forest of Dean Local History Society were given a conducted tour of the Old Ham Mine in the Forest of Dean by two History Society members who are also experienced 'cavers.

The Old Ham Mine is a complex of connected workings including those of Sling and New Dunn mines, both of which had fatalities occur during the years when they were commercially active. Thus these mines will be included in the 'Mining Fatalities ' CD which is being produced as part of the Local Heritage Initiative project.

The visit to the mine helped those involved to gain an appreciation of the conditions under which iron miners worked.
