The Tithing today
Location: Gloucestershire

Stroudend Tithing is situated mainly within the civil parish of Painswick, while the south of the Tithing includes residential and commercial areas of Stroud, in Gloucestershire. The boundaries of the Tithing go back over 1000 years to before the Norman Conquest, but today have no administrative function. The small village of Slad is situated in the east side of the Tithing and the outskirts of the larger village of Painswick are to the northwest.

The landscape we see today is the result of thousands of years of man’s intervention; however today’s economic pressures are impacting on the landscape; traditional small family farms are no longer viable, cider orchards have all but disappeared as have the dairy herds; pressure for housing land is pushing urban boundaries ever outward into the countryside. Fortunately the greater part of the Tithing still retains its rural character and is situated within the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The importance of the area in supporting the unique flora and fauna of the limestone grasslands and beech woods is recognised in the designation of Sites of Special Scientific Interest at Bulls Cross, The Frith, Juniper Hill and Worgan’s Wood. Management of these areas includes grazing projects funded by English Nature and the Cotswold Conservation Board. See section 4 on landscape projects for more information.

The importance of the historic urban areas of the Tithing are recognised in the designation of Stratford Park and the Stroudwater Canal Industrial Heritage zone as Conservation Areas. Many of the buildings within the Tithing are listed for their architectural or historic interest affording special protection. More details of local planning policies can be obtained on the District Council’s website at www.stroud.gov.uk
