The Anti-Slavery Arch Project
Location: Gloucestershire
This project has restored, interpreted and promoted the Arch at Paganhill, Stroud, a structure that commemorates the struggle against slavery. Slavery was a significant, if overlooked, feature of the local history of the area, and the nearby ports at Bristol and Gloucester. The project also made links with the current anti-slavery movement, which gave it a new relevance.
The physical structure of the arch has been renovated and repaired, and groups within the local community have gathered information and designed interpretative material, including a brass plaque, leaflets and a website.
At nearby Archway Comprehensive - which was named after the Arch - local artist Jane Ford helped the school put on a play and the school has developed an anti-slavery resource. Ten other schools across the country have followed Archway School's lead and now include modern day Anti-Slavery in their History syllabus.
The Local History Society held a seminar and published a book about 'Stroud and Slavery'.
All the information gathered by the project is available through a local preservation trust and the county records office.
For the story behind the project see 'The learning from this project page'.
