Willow - Kate Lynch's Book
Location: Somerset

Kate Lynch's exhibition of drawings and paintings 'Celebrating Somerset's Willow' is complemented by a 100-page book, with a foreword by David Bellamy, published by Furlong Fields Publishing (ISBN 0-9544394-0-6), price £12.95

Kate Lynch RWA has spent the last three years on the Somerset Levels and Moors drawing and painting the people who work in the willow industry.

This collection of atmospheric images not only captures and evokes an ancient way of life but also celebrates the ingenious ways in which these traditional farmers and makers have adapted to the 21st century; from the willow harvest and the traditional boiling and stripping to the making of shopping baskets, willow coffins, balloon baskets, spars for thatching, cricket bats, willow sculpture and woven river bank “spiling”.

‘Willow: paintings, drawings and Somerset voices’ includes 34 colour illustrations (oil paintings and pastels), 6 black and white drawings (willow charcoal) and 36 extracts from interviews with Somerset willow growers, basketmakers and other traditional willow craftspeople.
