Workers of Wellington and District - setting up an oral history project

Workers of Wellington and District - adapting to circumstances

Oral History of the Workers of Wellington and District Industry
Location: Somerset

The aim of the project is to raise awareness and understanding of the importance of several key industries to the industrial and cultural heritage of the town of Wellington and surrounding areas. It will do this through capturing the memories of those involved in these industries and the impact on the customs and traditions of those who worked or lived in the vicinity of the factories and work places. All of which have ceased working.

The recollections will be recorded on CD and mini discs and made available through local libraries, museums and the county records office. Over 300 people who worked in these industries are known still to be alive and living in the area and many will be contacted through involving a number of local groups such as women’s institutes, museum societies and the Somerset industrial Archaeological society. This is envisaged to be the first phase of the project with a possible further phase to include a printed book publication.
