The aim of the project is to raise awareness of the highway heritage of the communities and landscape within the Quantock Hills designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This will be achieved by local communities with guidance and co-ordination from the Quantock Hills Ranger Service identifying and investigating the historic names for road and lane junctions and to clearly mark these by adding a name collar to historic cast iron finger posts erected about 100 years ago. Refurbishment of the existing posts including painting in traditional colours will take place where necessitated by attachment of the collars. More than twenty locations where restoration and collar treatment is required has been identified. The project will permanently record the names of these historic locations for a leaflet to assist visitors to the area by following promoted routes through the hills.
A number of specific groups and the wider community will be involved in investigating the background and confirming the historic names and contributing to the text of the leaflet. Where possible local people will be able to add the collars and undertake the painting of the signs.
