The Steaming Back Project
Location: Somerset
This project will be co-ordinated by WRSA and will link into the region’s celebrations of Brunel’s 200th anniversary. The WSR was one of the last projects undertaken by Brunel before his death and it aims to link the communities along this stretch of line by investigating the importance of the railway to the development of the area.
School children will act as detectives to research and document items relating to Brunel in their locale and the results will be displayed in the WSRA museum at Bishops Lydeard; this aspect is strongly supported by the local press and will have a lot of coverage.
A heritage trail with accompanying leaflets and interpretation boards will also be researched by local children linking the station to the historic village of Bishops Lydeard and highlighting important historical features. Students from the local Arts & Technology College will use their skills to preserve historic railway artefacts and media students from the Community College will produce a video and oral tapes covering all aspects of the project.
Themed events relating to Brunel will take place on a monthly basis and a comprehensive website with integrated webcams around the station will be created to enable full accessibility.
The project is seen as a building block to link rural west Somerset to its heritage steam railway and will encourage in depth involvement via education, research and preservation. Everyone involved will benefit from the knowledge and experience and have a deeper understanding of this preserved part of our heritage.
