Location: South Gloucestershire
The People of Olveston and Aust in War; how the project started.
As part of the Remembrance Sunday Service in Olveston in November each year we hear a reading of the names of all those people from the Parishes of Olveston and Aust who died in the two World Wars and in Korea. This is a very moving occasion which is listened to with great respect. However, with the passing years there are decreasing numbers of those present who have any knowledge of who these people, whose names are listed on the village War Memorials, actually were.
A couple of years ago we discussed in The Olveston Parish Historical Society, OPHS, how we could do something about this. Gradually the idea was formulated that we should research, and put on record for present and future generations, short accounts of each of those who died. We would try to cover where they lived, who their family was, what their military unit was, what medals they were awarded, where they died and were buried. This task is now being carried out as part of the LHI funded project “The People of Olveston and Aust in Peace and in War”.
The work is led by Bill Morgan, with a team of another dozen or so people.
