Putting the pieces together - An extract from an article about the Fovant History Interest Group project published in First News, the quarterly magazine of Community First - working in partnership with communities in Wiltshire & Swindon (Autumn 2003)

When Margaret Mackenzie came to live in Fovant, she wanted to find out about the village’s history - but everyone she spoke to would suggest someone else who had collections of papers, post cards, photographs and other memorabilia.

“It seemed to me that a lot of people knew bits and pieces but nobody had put it all together,” says Margaret. "So I put a notice in the parish magazine to ask whether people were interested in forming a group to explore and preserve the history of Fovant, and we started the Fovant History Interest Group.

“Everyone keeps their own precious things - we didn’t want to gather everything together in a little heap like squirrels and create our own museum. But we quickly realised that we needed to record what we were finding out. We started out by making a list of which people knew what, or had which postcards or photographs.”

The group applied for help from the Countryside Agency’s Local Heritage Initiative scheme, which has enabled them to produce a web site onto which they are putting the history of the village. The information will also be in booklet form for those with no access to the internet. They have worked both at recording and indexing known history and at undertaking new research.
