Taking the Local Heritage Initiative - An extract from an article about the Pewsey Living Archive project published in First News, the quarterly magazine of Community First - working in partnership with communities in Wiltshire & Swindon (Summer 2003)

As well as a computerised archive and illustrated parish map, Pewsey’s Living Archive is producing a Heritage Centre brochure and a Heritage Trail booklet.

“The new Heritage Trail started off when we needed to update an existing Village Walk,” says Mike Asbury, Chairman of the Pewsey Heritage Working Group.

“As part of another Working Group project called Pewsey Voices, one of our members, Pat Thompson, walked through the village with Roger Pope, a local historian born and bred in Pewsey, while he talked into a minidisc recorder.

“We looked at the draft of this transcript and decided that it would make a really good basis for a village trail - more an informal stroll than a Heritage Walk.

We’ve got some old photographs from our historical archives, and a few new photographs, and with the help of the LHI grant we’ve produced a 28-page booklet called ‘Take a stroll around ... Pewsey Village’ that’s being published this month.”
