Restoration of the Mayo Memorial
Location: Wiltshire
The group intends to undertake a partial restoration of the stone and leadwork of a listed monument which is in the centre of the town which was built by public subscription to commemorate the life of CT Mayo, a local Victorian industrialist.
The restoration is in part to prevent further decay of the monument itself and to record its original features, but also to stimulate interest in CT Mayo and other aspects of Victorian Corsham. It is intended that the recording of the features of the monument will be done by volunteers, with professional restoration being undertaken to ensure good quality – this has been partly offered as in-kind by a local firm.
It is also intended to provide information and interpretation at the site of the monument. The project is also to include workshops, a static and a travelling exhibition, a photographic and video record of the project undertaken by local schools and a local youth club and the production of leaflets. It also intended to give public presentations on the subject and to upgrade the group’s website to accommodate the new information from the research.
