Daryl Jones - my LHI story
Location: Wiltshire
Daryl Jones is Senior Economic Development Officer with Swindon Borough Council, and Co-ordinator of the LHI Project ‘Swindon's Rural Heritage Trails’.
The Swindon branch of the Ramblers’ Association originally approached the Swindon Council department that deals with Planning and Rights of Way on Footpaths about specific funding available for projects they wanted to carry out.
Our planners pinpointed the heritage sites that would be suitable, I’m co-ordinating the project with the LHI, and the Ramblers’ Association are managing the specific elements of routes, writing the directions around the trails, and identifying alternative routes. They’re also clearing the paths where necessary, with a strimmer that was paid for by the LHI grant.
The LHI grant has also paid for a digital camera which the Ramblers’ Association will be able to use for future projects. This meant I was able to learn how to use a digital camera - how to download the software, and transfer the images. I’ve then shown Pat Crabb of the Ramblers’ Association how to use it, and she has taken the photographs for the trail leaflets.
We’re producing five different trails, each one on a sheet of A4 with a map on one side with notes to guide you round the route, and photographs of the heritage landmarks on the other. The Ramblers are walking the trails again to check that everything’s OK, and we hope to go to print this summer.
The best thing about this project is the teamwork - the Ramblers, myself and the council’s Rights of Way officer, Annie Ellis, working together.
