We Must Be Quackers !!
Location: Birmingham

We Must Be Quackers !

Christmas may be over but not for all of us on the River Rea Heritage Trail Project ! We will have lots of presents to open in the next few months !

With less than 3 months to go to our opening event we now have placed orders for interpretation panels, signage and our leaflet is being designed.

Our Website is also under construction and can be found at www.riverreatrail.org.uk

Everything we are doing is designed to be informative and encourage local people to find out more about the history, archaeology and ecology of their area.

We are very lucky and have Birmingham City Council Planning Archaeologist and author Dr Mike Hodder working on our project.

Mike has brought a wonderful perspective to the project, dispelling the myth that Birmingham is a young industrial city.

From Bronze Age Burnt Mounds to Medieval Moated Manor Houses the River Rea has a long and fascinating history. Mike has really opened our eyes to the hidden history of Birmingham.

A big part of the River Rea's history are the water-mills that used the river as a source of power for over 700 years. There was at one time a water-mill for every mile of the river, which runs 15 miles from its source to the River Tame.

All the information we are using on the water-mills has been kindly provided by George Demidowicz from his own research. As little remains of the Rea's watermills George's research has brought them to life for us and will from Easter be on interpretation panels along the river for everyone to read.

Easter is indeed very special to us as Easter Monday is our opening event in Kings Norton Park, Birmingham.

On the day George and Mike will be leading guided history walks and we will be holding a rubber duck race.

All this work to finish and 1000 rubber ducks to look after we must be quackers !!!!
