Eye Living Churchyard Project
Location: Herefordshire

The aim of the project is to involve local people to improve the care and management of St. Peter & St Paul’s ancient churchyard.

The group want to;
  • conserve and promote the biodiversity of the site,
  • protect and conserve the memorials and monuments,
  • promote the educational aspects of the area,
  • improve facilities for those using the churchyard and
  • develop a management plan to protect the heritage

    With professional support the group will be carrying out a number of surveys for fungi, lichens, grasses, butterflies, lichens, reptiles, amphibians and small mammals, also bat and bird surveys with accompanying walks to raise awareness within the community.

    The group will also be carrying out a topographical survey with the County Archaeologist to help establish whether or not this 12th Century church had a previous history as a sacred place.

    They will also be carrying out some conservation work on the trees, memorials and hedgerow restoration as well as purchasing tools to enable them to look after the churchyard in the future.
