Herefordshire Lore
Location: Herefordshire
The group is looking to record the wartime memories of the women who worked at the Royal Ordnance Factory Hereford, target of the only raid on Herefordshire during the war.
Due to reporting restrictions placed during this period, the memories of the munitions workers were never recorded. The group are looking to produce a leaflet and book, hold a touring exhibition and produce a website.
As a result, old photographs, tape recordings and a 150,000 word transcript - all memories of former munitions workers at Royal Ordnance Factory Rotherwas during two World Wars - have been put into sake keeping at Herefordshire Records office.
Recollections include how the work was unskilled, hard and dangerous, and memories of the day the factory was bombed. The group have managed to interview over thirty former workers from Ross-on-Wye alone and over 50 people in all.
Herefordshire Lore's book about the factory and its workers, “In The Munitions: Women At War In Herefordshire”, has become a local best seller. The books launch was marked with a dramatisation of an extract from the book, presented in authentic costumes made especially.
What Next? The group is looking forward to the next project, possibly a look at the county during the ‘30s, ‘40s, ’50s, and ’60s.
