BBC Gardener’s World presenter Monty Don joined members of the Much Cowarne Conservation Project in Hereford to launch a scheme aimed at conserving the county’s most endangered wildlife.

Monty Don attends Hereford Nature Trust Event © Much Cowarne Conservation Project Monty appeared at the Hereford Nature Trust event in June 2002 to offer advice on how people can help conserve nature and wildlife with just a little effort.

Richard Bradbury, the event’s organiser and leader of the Much Cowarne Conservation Project, said: "Biodiversity means the variety and interdependence of life on earth. Monty focused on how we could all help by gardening organically, even if it was just in a window box."

The project has included people of all ages from the community. The youngest members include children from Burley Gate Primary School, recently announced as Heritage Stars Winners, who have been helping with one task – creating a small orchard of native fruit trees which is being planted at the school.

This project has been regarded as so significant that the group has successfully applied for Jubilee funding. "The Jubilee Orchards Initiative together with Jubilee Fruit Tree Kits will award schools and groups grants of up to £200 to create a traditional orchard in their grounds," Richard added.

"Around 60 people turned up on the day, all pledging to take part in the scheme and we’ll be on hand to offer help and advice to those who join the initiative."
