If you’ve ever lamented the fact that apples don’t taste the way they used to, then you should sample the Much Cowarne Red.

Preservation work on the locally well-known apple variety Much Cowarne Red has been a tasty job for residents from a Herefordshire village. It's part of a project undertaken by the villagers, who've banded together to trace the area’s history from the past 100 years. From rediscovering old apple varieties to collecting personal reminiscences of older residents in the village, it's all been part of the Much Cowarne Conservation project.

Monty Don attends Hereford Nature Trust Event © Much Cowarne Conservation ProjectThe team members have been getting a little help from Monty Don, too. He attended the Herefordshire Nature Trust event to offer tips on organic methods of gardening and conservation.

The original aim of the Much Cowarne Conservation project was to record the history of the village during the last century. Since then, the project’s success has snowballed as team members have been collecting stories and personal reminiscences of older residents.

“We have a remarkable collection of stories and pictures which will provide a fascinating insight into life in a Herefordshire village during a time of profound change,” comments Martin Hewitt who founded the Much Cowarne History Group. “ A conscious decision was made at an early stage to let the words speak for themselves." Many of the stories are from residents who actually lived through the changes during the last 100 years.

The group is shortly to publish a 200 page book which will include photos and personal memories of many Much Cowarne residents.

Overall, the project has provided an enjoyable and inspirational way to celebrate a century of life in the village.
