LEOMINSTER LIVING HISTORY
BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO HISTORIC PRIORY

13 November 2003
“How we built the Priory”
Venue: the Norman Church, Leominster 7:30 PM

Also 14th, 15th November

Civil unrest is spreading in the Herefordshire town of Leominster. The word is out that there’s going to be a riot!

There’s a whisper, too, that a group of Welshmen plan an attack on civic leaders. And a storm is brewing which will endanger members of the Royal Family.

It’s all part of a vivid new play, “How we built the Priory”, commissioned by the Friends of Leominster Priory written and produced by a local professional with musical direction by a local composer and funded by the Nationwide Building Society through the Countryside Agency, which will highlight “in brilliant Technicolor” one of Britain’s least-known architectural gems, Leominster Priory, built in the 12th Century on the orders of Henry 1st after the death of his son in a shipwreck. It is certainly the most ambitious theatrical project undertaken in the building in living memory

The Story of the Priory is an exciting, action-packed affair, a Norman soap-opera bringing real events to vivid life. There’s romance, intrigue, tragedy, violence, and rich atmosphere; a tale to strike a deep chord with modern audiences, and a motivation that’s to be applauded -- this is self-help, no need for Government regeneration initiatives here!

The play will be performed in the nave of the Norman Church on 13, 14 and 15 November at 7.30 pm. But there’s more to the event than simple “on-the-night” fundraising. The effort to put on the specially-written play, professionally written and produced, highlights a will to preserve and enhance Leominster’s Priory by keeping it at the heart of local events.

John Campbell, Coordinator of “Operation Leofric” (detailed in release 2), makes clear his group’s vision. “The Priory Church is a building which houses concerts and events, and which draws visitors and tourists who contribute to Leominster’s economy. We want our town’s prosperity to increase, and we can go on being fairly self-sufficient if we succeed in making this unique and very special building the central feature it deserves to be on the tourist and visitor trail”.

The play’s actors are from many backgrounds -- housewives, students, an accountant, musicians and more. They’re real community performers who’ve decided to take action rather than holding out hands for public money.
