Pembridge Amenity Trust
Location: Herefordshire

This is the second to be run by a group based in the parish of Pembridge. In the first project they carried out a general survey of the village’s heritage.

They are now conducting a new and more comprehensive project to investigate the development of the village from 1020-1500, carry out an excavation of a fortified site, survey and dendro-date a number of properties, and research the wider Anglo-Saxon settlements in the area. The group have secured funding for part of the project including the archaeological dig.

Progress so far has seen a Dendrochronology programme to age the houses and the digging of three exploratory trenches. As this is a community project, parishioners and school children have been involved in the digs, under supervision of professional archaeologists.

The scope of the project has been extended to include a historical investigation into the settlement of the area.

Now that a meeting of the main service providers has taken place, the bulk of the project’s work will start in the spring of 2004.
