The Ledbury English Festival 2003
Location: Herefordshire

The historic market town of Ledbury lies in deepest Herefordshire and enjoys a rich heritage, especially in connection with English literature, principally through John Masefield, Elizabeth Barret Browning and the Dymock poets.

The original plan was to present a week long festival to celebrate this including guided walks, an exhibition on Masefield, plays to be based on the areas history, events, music and celebration of traditional local produce. The group also wanted to produce a new town guide featuring history of the town.

The town presented a very successful event offering a broad experience and celebration of Englishness. Music and dance played a part with, for example, 600 people attending a performance of Camina Burana. The dance groups continue to exist and perform after the event.

There is good progress on the production of a town guide and the website is also nearing completion. Andy Ward received the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award from the council for his efforts in connection with the festival.

As a useful footnote for all projects, the festival maintains that good publicity made all the difference to the success of the project!
