Weobley God's Acre
Location: Herefordshire
Under the influence of Caring for God’s Acre, a Leominster-based charity concerned with the conservation and care of churchyards, a loosely organised committee came together in Weobley to investigate and improve and the village’s own historic churchyard.
Designated as a County Wildlife Site, the churchyard is at least 1000 years old, with heritage features including a medieval preaching cross which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) and the grave of Ella Mary Leather, author of The Folklore of Herefordshire.
The group wanted to survey the site, run archaeological training and interpret the archaeological heritage. As well as carrying out management works, they would raise awareness of the heritage and natural history of the area by holding events, producing leaflets, putting up a notice board, and setting up fieldwork programmes for schools.
