Ditton Priors, Rolling Back the Years
Location: Shropshire
This project is the result of the discovery of a very large 18th century estate map which accurately shows the parish in 1768.
Leased to the local history group, the map is helping the project with researching the parish's history.
The group also discovered an early 17th century wall painting, identified as a very rare painting style known as the "Shropshire Swirls". The project investigated this before the owner plastered over it!
The research work has been helped by holding three workshops to ‘English Heritage’ standards and including dendro-dating of the buildings in the village. There are over a 1,000 slides ready as source material for the talks programme.
In addition, the project has extended its remit to include the histories of the people in the houses, resulting in the making of 28 family genealogy databases. As part of this work oral histories are being taken from older residents.
The project will culminate on 1st, 2nd and 3rd of May 2004 at the village hall in an exhibition, showing what has been discovered of the village’s housing, people and industrial heritage.
