Grassland walk June 2005
Location: Shropshire

Mind the rabbit droppings!

Do you know your panicle from your spike or spikelet? How about awns? Can you tell the difference between squirrel tail, fox tail or cat's tail grasses? What about Yorkshire fog, Timothy grass or white and black bryony?

Dr Kate Thorne led a grassland walk on a beautiful summer's evening, showing us the acid grassland, the rank grasses and shrubs and trees along the top of the hill. Some of us even remembered the differences and the names at the end of two hours spent enjoying the diversity of grasses on the hill. And the rabbit droppings?......when you are kneeling to examine the low growing flowers, you have to watch your knees!
