Mary Webb and Spring Cottage, Lyth Hill. 1916-1927
Location: Shropshire

Spring Cottage, Lyth Hill is where Mary Webb was at her happiest.

Lyth Hill and the surrounding area is very important to the members of the Mary Webb Society because this is where Mary and Henry Webb bought a rough stretch of field on the top plateau of the hill and, in 1916, building work began on their dream home which was to be called Spring Cottage. It was completed in the Springtime. This was also Mary's favourite time of the year.

Spring Cottage, Lyth Hill is where Mary Webb was at her happiest. Out on the wooded hill for hours, she was watching, listening and writing. She would spend the whole day at one with nature, so quiet and still that birds would alight on her as she sat motionless.

An extract from her poem entitled Colomen explains:-

On arms and shoulders doves alight
Multiple-tinted, like a bright
Tapestry that time has faded.
Softly purple, lilac shaded,
The lady standeth like a tree
Bent down with blossom.......

Mary's novels 'House in Dormer Forest' and 'Seven for a Secret' were also written at Spring Cottage.

The Library on Lythwood Road, Bayston Hill is named after Mary Webb and holds copies of her novels and poems, society leaflets and the Mary Webb society Archives. It also houses a Mary Webb commemorative slate plaque and has a garden at the rear which is dedicated to her.

The Mary Webb Society was established at a public meeting at Meole Brace in 1972.

  • To honour the memory of Mary Webb
  • To further the reading and appreciation of her works
  • To liaise with other organisations
  • To foster appreciation of the Mary Webb country
