Shrewsbury Wildlife Trust
Location: Shropshire

The shrewsbury District Branch of the Wildlife Trust started in 1984.
It aims to support the Shropshire Wildlife Trust in its work and at the same time give members a stimulating and enjoyable time.

Most branch activities take place in the Shrewsbury area.
The activities are varied and change according to circumstances. There are fun walks to enjoy wildlife, occasional talks with good speakers, an annual plant sale to raise funds for the operation of the Branch and for SWT, training sessions to upgrade wildlife skills particularly in flower identification, and survey work of wildlife sites as needed.

2005’s events got off to a very successful start with the talk on polecats by Johnny Birk. This was followed by three walks or visits led by different members to interesting sites around Shrewsbury. The evening walk along the River Severn was particularly successful and Ron Iremonger has kindly agreed to do another one next season.
The Plant Sale in The Square raised over £600. It was another monetary and social success. Many thanks to all people who have supplied or sold plants and garden bric-brac. The money in hand has been spent on library books, chairs and a microscope. Donations have gone to the
Lapwing and Snipe and Prees Heath appeals.

There have been five group visits for survey work on sites in Telford and around Shrewsbury. The Rea Brook Valley survey is at last finished but this year’s work remains to be written up.
Ian Thompson and Jane Ing have helped with Verge Survey training days, a joint SABC/SWT initiative. Jane Ing also did a grasses course for the trainees

Individual members have continued to serve on various committees, such as SWT Council, River Users Group, Lyth Hill Project. New work with the Local Access Forum and the Shrewsbury Green Spaces Wildlife Survey has also begun.
Branch members are conspicuous at SWT meetings by their numbers and occasionally by their comments. The Trust Development Plan and the Branches’ Constitution have been studied carefully and commented on.
In summary, a very busy but happy year for the Branch with much achieved and plenty left to do next season.
