Trust claims victory in Civil War celebration
Location: Shropshire
July 2002
Shrawardine Castle was once again a battle scene during the summer of 2002, exactly 357 years after it was captured by Roundheads.
Montford Parish Millennium Green Trust organised the Civil War weekend event, which saw the Fairfax Battalia and Winchester Group getting involved in battle re-enactments with villagers – all for the purposes of reliving history.
Originally built in the 13th century, Shrawardine Castle had been falling into a state of disrepair since its original capture by the Roundheads during the Civil War. However, in 1999 the castle site was bought by the Trust, with funding from the LHI and Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council. Work has centred on restoring the castle ruins, and since progressed to planting hedgerows and creating a pond. The group has also produced a video, a guide book and a CD-ROM.
One of the project’s most interesting developments was the results of a geophysical survey of the castle site. The research and topographical survey uncovered many interesting details, including the castle’s original name – Castle Isabel.
Interesting facts such as these were on display during the weekend event. Sylvia Stanton, from the Montford Parish Millennium Green Trust, said “The re-enactment was absolutely brilliant. It was well attended and everyone really enjoyed themselves…. we have had wonderful comments about the weekend. We would like to do events like this again in the future. People were really enthralled with the local history and the CD-ROM.”
