Consall Lime Kiln Restoration
Location: Staffordshire
The Churnet Valley in Staffordshire is rich in industrial heritage dating back to the 18th century. This project is working closely with local residents and the village school, in restoring a lime kiln to which the public will have access.
The group is researching the heritage of the site and producing interpretation material and a video.
Also planned were local events such as taking the local children to the site by canal so that they can experience how the site would have been used in the 18th century. Finally, the project is also planning a guided walk of the site.
The Highs and Lows… All outputs for the project have been produced, although the completion deadline has been extended to allow for the final preparation of two items (see below).
The restoration has been well received by residents, visitors and users of the canal. The children particularly enjoyed making the artwork for the project, produced with an artist in residence. This involved making and decorating tiles in response to the kiln and the heritage it embodies.
Guided walks are done by the RSPB, as the kiln is on their land. The restored kiln is a popular addition to the walks and to the area.
Challenges! The materials for the information boards are all in place, they just need pulling together. Pressing for their completion can be difficult when the work relies on the voluntary contribution of specialists! Also, some contractors are reluctant to send in their bills!
What next? For its next project, the trust are considering the restoration of local milestones.
