Friends of Ford Green Hall
Location: Staffordshire
Ford Green Hall is the only surviving timber-framed yeomen farmer's house in Stoke on Trent. Part of the Grade 2* listed building is an 18th century dovecote.
The Friends of the Museum group have put the Dovecote at the heart of the project. Dovecotes provided a source of fresh meat, and the surrounding garden provided a range of other foods and herbs. The group have presented a number of events that have explored and celebrated 17th and 18th century ‘cuisine’, with opportunities to taste the food and enjoy the wine!
Other events have included a period plant sale, with a Herb Society specialist talking about their uses. In June they held an Elizabethan Fair in costume with music, sword fighting and children demonstrating games from the period. A record 600 visitors attended this colourful event
In addition, the group has included local school children in model making, poetry, drawings and making friezes. Friends of the Museum Volunteers cleared out the Dovecote and did a building survey. The Hall is now ready for 3 interpretation panels; one for inside the dovecote and two for the garden. The garden will also get a leaflet about its design, layout and planting.
Currently, the web site being prepared and the next event is to celebrate the project’s success.
