Pub Goers Hazy Memories

Pub Goers Hazy Memories
Location: Staffordshire

TAMWORTH tipplers are being asked to share their memories and tales of pubs and drinking in the town – which will then be included in a special guidebook.

The exciting new project “Old Pubs and Old Ales” is about to be kick-started by the Lichfield, Sutton and Tamworth branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

And now the Heritage Lottery Fund has given the scheme the thumbs up, work on the project is about to get started.

Organisers are now looking for people to come and share their memories and anecdotes –however hazy – at a number of sessions across the town.

Memories of how Tamworth pubs have changed over the years, experiences through the war years and romance are just some of the aspects CAMRA is hoping to uncover.

Pub-goers aged over 60 are being encouraged to come and share their memories of days gone by. People can either come alone, in groups or with friends or family.

People are also encouraged to bring any old photos, postcards or pub memorabilia with them that they may wish to share with the CAMRA team

All interviews will be recorded and individual copies given to those who have taken part before the guidebook is put together.

Once all the interviews have been carried out, the memories will be put into a commemorative guidebook – and 10,000 will be given away free of charge through the town’s pubs.

CAMRA’s Pub Preservation Officer, Wayne Pell, said: “Tamworth is packed with old pubs and we are really excited about unravelling their history.”

“The most exciting part about this project is uncovering the real characters who have been in and out of Tamworth pubs over the last 50 years.

“This will help us take a look at how our pubs have shaped our lives and communities – both through the good times and the bad.

“We really hope this project will help preserve traditional pubs for generations to enjoy for many years to come.”

Heritage Lottery Fund awarded the local branch of CAMRA more than £20,000 to produce the guidebook after it applied for a Local Heritage Initiative grant.

As well as working with the Heritage Lottery Fund, Tamworth CAMRA will also be working with other local heritage groups.
