The Conduit Head Project
Location: Staffordshire
What began as a proposal to the Trustees of The Conduit Trust in 1998 was that something should be done to commemorate the Millennium. This proposal has grown into a project to chart the story of the old Cannock landmarks in and around the Town Centre and indicate the positions of the six water pumps.
It was hoped to secure funding to help trace as many as possible of the old pumps, of which there were six in total and these were strategically placed around the town centre to provide the people of Cannock with clean drinking water in the 1700's. The pumps were subsequently removed during the 1940's and 50's. The idea was to reposition the pumps in their original locations with commemorative plaques. In addition urgent repair work was required on the Conduit Head itself.
It soon became obvious that many people in and around Cannock were charting the history of individual landmarks e.g. :- Cannock Bowling Green, High Green, St Luke's Church and The Conduit Trust. It was decided to link all these individual research projects together and under the umbrella of the Conduit Head Project produce a story of the old Cannock Town Centre.
The project is sub-divided into two specific sections, these being the restoration of the pumps and producing a book on the story of Cannock town centre. The book is called The story of Cannock Town Centre through the ages. It looks at six local landmarks situated in and around Cannock Town Centre
