Bentley Hall Cairn
Location: Walsall

Bentley Cairn Restoration Group was set up to restore, improve and interpret the site of Bentley Hall, former home of Royal supporter Jane Lane, which was famously used by Charles II after his flight from the battle of Worcester in 1651.

The restoration involved the local community in an art project to design a new gateway, railings, and a garden around the cairn, which is situated on one of the highest points in Walsall on the route of the Monarch’s Way long distance footpath.

The project worked closely with three nearby schools, one of which focused on children with special needs.

The group raised awareness of the history of the area by holding a series of events, including four walks based on the cairn, talks by local experts and by producing temporary exhibitions, an on-site interpretative panel and commemorative bookmark.
