Holding Your Ground
Location: Warwickshire
Racing Club Warwick is a not-for-profit Football club three promotions away from the Nationwide League. The Club, based in the most deprived ward in Warwick, decided to apply for funding after holding local consultation.
The aim was to carry out a reminiscence project, outreach work in surrounding communities, hold events and produce interpretative features at the Club. The group was also been awarded a Countryside Agency Community Service Grant to run concurrently with the Local Heritage Initiative Grant to provide an IT training facility for local residents.
The project has been a great success, not least because the grants awarded were the first the community won. As a result, they have become highly motivated and have, for example, won funds for a Youth Club and now have ‘Community Education’ active in the area.
The reminiscence project worked particularly well. Elderly and young people from the area talked about their different ambitions and hopes. Holiday experiences from olden times were well received!
The club are generous in their praise of the LHI as it has done a great job in facilitating the community in growing. The momentum that has been created will mean that new projects will continue after the end of the LHI work.
Other impacts the project has led to are a Community newsletter, training for community members in the use of PC’s and Mac’s and the inclusion of other villages on Warwick periphery in looking to the future of the area.
