Early Iron Works around Stottesdon
Location: Worcestershire

Recent work carried out in the project area has shown evidence of previously unknown medieval iron working sites (bloomeries). Various local groups and individuals have joined forces to undertake a broad study of the area as a whole but particularly focusing on the bloomeries and set them in their wider context in terms of economic and landscape history.

The group will be carrying out topographical and geophysical surveys of the bloomeries and collecting bloomery slag for analysis. Together with the County Archaeologist they will also be leading fieldwalks across the site to confirm the existence of bloomery slag and searching for medieval pottery shards.

To supplement the information, the group will be conducting a comprehensive search of medieval documentation, and carrying out a programme of fieldwalking to document hedgerow species to help build up a picture of the medieval landscape.

The group plan to interpret the results of the project through leaflets, exhibitions, walks and talks and the reconstruction of a medieval Bloomery. They will also be employing the services of the ‘Discovering Shropshire’s Heritage Team’ to develop web pages for the group.
