Upton-upon-Severn Civic Society
Location: Worcestershire
The groups and individuals brought together under the aegis of the Upton upon Severn Civic Society will research and study the local heritage and ecology of the town, river and ham (water meadow).
They will assemble materials –written, photographic and artistic to illustrate what they have discovered. This will be presented to the public in the form of three interpretation panels (at key points in the town). Associated leaflets will also be produced, and especially for the children, quest trails.
The historical research will concentrate on the floods that have affected Upton, using the groups experience of oral history interviews to record those who have experienced the floods. The ecological studies will concentrate on the fish to be found in the Severn and surveys of insects, birds and grasses will be conducted on the Ham, a SSSI and on Stockyatt Meadow.
The first interpretation panel (in the town car park) will show an overview of the town and its key sites, the second (situated in the Old Churchyard) concentrates on the historical built environment including the floods, and the third, on the riverbank, will explain the heritage of the river and the SSSI.
The leaflets and quest trails will be available free from the Tourist information Centre
