Wyre Piddle Environs Archaeological Project
Location: Worcestershire
During construction of a new bypass, significant Bronze Age, Iron Age and Romano-British finds were made. The project is phased, and it is hoped that over a number of years a full archaeological survey can be made of the area. The first phase of the project will include: training in field walking; analyse of finds; two geophysical surveys; a CD Rom/website production; involvement of the school in a heritage arts project; holding an exhibition; producing a report on the first year's findings.
Progress so far The CD Rom has been made and has lots of material on it that resulted from the walks, surveys and the subsequent analysis of the data and finds. The first year report is also on this.
A particularly interesting event was an ‘Archaeology Road Show’, run along the lines of Antiques Roadshow. Local people were encouraged to bring in their own finds from the area.
What next? The group is continuing the project this year with a new grant. More field walks are planned in addition to adding to the activities and data already undertaken and collected.
One thing the group have learnt is how much time it takes to organise volunteers – a common theme across many projects! This has not deterred them from pressing on with the second phase of the project and levels of local involvement are high.
