Grass Roots Theatre Group
Location: Barnsley
The group intend to stage a play, "Time & Chance", based on the industrial history of the area and the effects on local people of changing from an agrarian to industrial way of life. The play has been researched and written by the group and will focus on the construction of the Barnsley Canal and its impact on people living in the Cawthorne basin. The play will also look forward to the introduction of steam powered engines and the effect these also had on the community. The project will involve 150 volunteer performers, musicians and crew and will be staged in Cannon Hall Park from the 6th to the 10th July inclusive. 
Participants will be able to attend history workshops led by a local historian, talks will be held in the primary school on life in 1805, with an additional lecture by Jim Richie, a local historian. Guided walks along the Silkstone Wagon Way will be held and an exhibition of photographs and drawings by the Barnsley Dearne and Dove Canal Trust and Grass Roots Theatre will be held in the Cannon Hall museum and Barnsley Library. The play will be performed over 5 nights The outputs also include a video and the research work will be interpreted in the programme for the audience. These will also be accessible to the community on the LHI website.
