Cawthorne J&I School Canal Project

With the help of Local Historians, Jim Ritchie and Jack Turton the children at Cawthorne J&I School explored the remains of the canal basin at Cawthorne, the waggonway between Silkstone and Cawthorne and various artefacts connected with the industrial revolution in the area.

Jim Ritchie explains how the canal changed life in Cawthorne and how coal was moved from the pits at Silkstone to the Canal using horse drawn carts on an early form of railway.


Children learn about child labour in the 18/19th Century
The children visited the monument in Silkstone erected to commemorate the deaths of 26 child workers in the Huskar pit disaster of 1808.
