Location: Barnsley

Members of the cast of Time & Chance at the first singing rehearsal at Cannon Hall Open Farm © Grass RootsRehearsals for Time and Chance began in March in Cannon Hall Open Farm barn where the cast gathered three evenings a week. By May, we were meeting four times a week. Many children are involved, foregoing the support of their peer groups to act alongside adults, who, before their involvement in the play, were strangers to them. Our youngest member is eight years old; our eldest is seventy five.

All ages are involved in the production, including teenage boys! © Grass RootsAs with "One Breath," our celebratory Millennium play, there is a strong sense of community. After a hard day, it takes some effort to drag yourself out to rehearsal prepared for two or three more hours of physically and emotionally demanding work; yet people are ready to do it. There is no time wasted in rehearsal but there is a lot of laughter too.

Many of the cast have not performed in front of an audience before, whilst some have years of experience behind them. There is no star system here, however, everyone's contribution is welcome.

Over 120 historically correct costumes have had to be made by the seamstresses who range in age from 30 to 80! Costumes range from the Squire to the Redcoat solders via the working men and women of the village. Props have also been made based upon detailed research. These range from "Brown Bess" muskets to carts and wagons for the miller. Artists are involved in the design and production of the set, posters and programmes and a construction team will swing into action to convert the grounds of Cannon Hall into a huge stage with covered seating for the audience and musicians.
