Time & Chance
Location: Barnsley
Grass Roots Theatre Group is based in Cawthorne and works with young people between the ages of 8 and 16 as well as adults to involve them in the performance arts. In the year 2000 we performed our first community drama, "One Breath," involving around 150 people of all ages (7 to 76) in nightly performances in Cannon Hall Park. The show was a sell out and received a rapturous response, being repeated at Elsecar Heritage Centre due to popular demand. "Time and Chance" is our second effort. As with "One Breath," everything is home grown: local writer, director, composer, designer. Over 100 local people, headed by Bill Fisher(Lamproom, Worsborough Mysteries) and Ann Rusby (mother of Kate Rusby) will perform the play from July 6-10 in the grounds of Cannon Hall. As before we transform the area into a theatre with a huge stage with covered seating. Time and Chance looks at the lives of ordinary people at the turn of the 18/19 century and examines the effects of the coming of the canal to Cawthorne Basin. A fictitious story brings to life real concerns of the time.
The rehearsals for Time & Chance started in March 2004. There is a cast of over 100 actors and some 120 individual costumes. Costumes have been made by a team of seamstresses in Cawthorne and from the surrounding villages. Dozens of people have been involved in the manufacture of props, from a barge to Brown Bess muskets to a blacksmiths forge.
