Bill Fisher and Ann Rusby play the lead roles of William Kershaw, a miller, and his wife Harriet. William finds that the water supply to his mill has been severely reduced by the demands of the newly opened canal to Barnby Basin in Cawthorne.

Richard Nicholson as Patrick, the Irish labourer who is employed in the construction of the Barnsley Canal and who is caught in all sorts of trouble by the villagers.
