Valusta Reunion at Royston library
Location: Barnsley
A reunion of Valusta workers on September 12 2003
On September 12 2003 the group organised a reunion of Valusta workers at Royston Library. Valusta was a company which operated in Royston throughout the 40s 50s 60s 70s and 80s making shirts and pyjamas at its two factories. Sometime during the 70s the company was taken over by Burberry who are perhaps more well known. During the period the factory operated it was by far the biggest employer of women and girls in the area.
The group were able to display some two hundred digital images some dating back to the 50s showing the girls at work and enjoying social events. While the visitors were looking at the images, others were able to pass on reminiscences to members of the group.
The event attracted in excess of sixty visitors over a four hour period and the information gathered will help the group to produce a booklet describing the life and times of the Valusta Shirt Factory.
