St Helen's Well
Location: Barnsley

This project is studying, restoring and interpreting an historical, monastic (and later agricultural) site in East Barnsley. The project is particularly focusing on a well which dates back to before 1234.

The project group consists of a local residents' association in partnership with neighbouring groups and a school.

The well is in the grounds of the school, although the project is improving access on the adjoining land. The project is discovering more about this locally-known, but little understood, site and is ensuring public access.

The project is undertaking a geophysical survey and some field investigative survey work. These surveys are taking place under the supervision of the County Archaeologist, and the group is trying to ascertain where the well and surrounding features lie.

The project is also planning a second phase which will provide better access and interpretaton. In Phase 2, educational work will also be undertaken.

All of the group's findings are being lodged with the local authority, and are being included on the school's and authority's website.
