Plans for the Christian Time-Line in Addingham
Location: Bradford

We are planning the following complementary and interlinked activities, in association with other churches in the village, with the school and with other village organisations, and all interested individuals:
  • We will commission scientists to use dendro-dating techniques to establish the exact age of the church roof timbers, which will shed light on local secular and ecclesiastical building techniques down the years. This new information will be made available to visitors.
  • We will commission a further archaeological dig at St. Peter’s , to be accompanied by a public open day of finds, and by a display at the Manor House Museum in Ilkley
  • We will hold workshops on
    • stonecarving : with reference to Anglian cross carvings and to the Addingham burial memorial stone
    • Saxon food : to appreciate Saxon living conditions, and in preparation for the Feast
    • Drama for young people : focussing on producing a specially written local play for performance as part of the celebration
    • Archaeology : illustrated by the work carried out at St. Peter’s, drawing on expertise from the University of Bradford and the West Yorkshire Archaeological Trust
    • Village history trail : to produce and publish a trail to highlight the development of our village from its earliest times in the light of events in its Christian history
  • We will hold presentations on
    • Local history : a half-day school in collaboration with the Olicana Historical Society
    • Historical findings : presented under the auspices of Addingham Civic Society
  • We will develop a programme of music and words starting from the Early English period, to give an aural illustration of the passing of time for use at the Celebration weekend. We will produce an audio cd of words, sounds and music for visitors to the church, to illustrate to the history of the church building, worship and and community.
  • We will research and produce outdoor information boards, accessible to walkers on the Dales Way which passes through our grounds as well as to visitors to the church. These will explain the history of the site and village, pointing out visible features of interest, and linking these with other related local sites along the Way, such as the Ilkley crosses, the Quaker Meeting House at Farfield, and the Viking graves at Burnsall.
  • Based on the new findings, we will produce historical information about the church for visitors in a readily accessible multilingual format, and backed up by our webpages for those who are further away.
  • Our popular annual Fete will have a historical theme as a light-hearted reflection of our LHI project, and to help publicise the other events
Our project will lead up to a weekend of celebration, at which we will dedicate:
  • a fitting carved memorial stone to mark the burial site of the re-interred remains of our Saxon ancestors, which were exhumed in the archaeological digs
  • the new information boards, which will tell people of their history and the history of the site and community.
The whole village will be involved in this celebration, deepening our knowledge and appreciation of the Saxon period in the development of our village life since that time. Accompanying all-age events at this time will include:
  • performance of a specially written play
  • musical performances by the village choir
  • a “Saxon Feast”
  • a story-telling event, focusing on the history of our community told through the stories of local characters down the ages
  • historical talks
  • a project exhibition
We will make a photographic and video record of all these events so that it can be referenced in the future.

Please see http://www.addinghamrectory.fsnet.co.uk/christiantimeline.htmfor confirmation of dates and times of these events – and we look forward to seeing you there!

(Please note that these plans may be subject to unavoidable change as the project progresses)
