Old Bell Chapel Action Group
Location: Bradford

The aim of the project is to raise awareness of the Old Bell Chapel and Cemetery in thornton. The group intend to open up physical access to the site for local people to appreciate it's history and get involved in researching the people who are laid to rest there. which includes Joseph Lister, a friend of Lord Fairfax & author of the Bolling Hall ghost story, the Foster family founders of the Black Dyke Mills & the Knowles family who were local important quarry owners. Patrick Bronte preached in the chapel between 1815 and 1820 (all the Brontes were christened in the chapel)

The group will involve local people in clearance and access work in the cemetery grounds and researching and designing interpretation boards to be placed in situ. This is supported by the Bronte Society. A local historian will advise the group in writing the text for the interpretation boards and the 'Free Spirit' Youth group have been studying links with the Bronte family to include on the interpretation material.

The group meet once a week in the church hall and will organise displays of their research and activities to encourage local involvement. They have links with Clayton First School and St James School and the teachers intend to use the site, once improved, as a resource for local history.

Outputs also include an improved access path and ramp on the site and a leaflet designed by the youth group.
