The St. Ives Story
Location: Bradford
The Friends of St Ives are a group of volunteers committed to the research, conservation, enjoyment and dissemination of the rich man-made and natural heritage of the St Ives Estate. Working in close collaboration with Bradford Council and the University of Bradford, the project aims to improve access across the estate and interactively educate visitors to the park via display boards, open days, school visits, guided and self-guided walks, seminars, leaflets and books.
Its ultimate aim is to increase awareness of the Estate’s multi-period landscape via active community involvement and by doing so preserve and utilise a valuable resource for future generations.
The project will involve archaeological evaluation, non-intrusive survey of features, small-scale excavation, survey and recording of extant buildings with a view for conservation, documentary research, drop-in sessions to record memories of the Estate, as well as a wide variety of ecological projects examining the wide and varied flora and fauna within the landscape.
This will run in conjunction with a series of events, such as a Hallowe’en walks, which will explore the legends and folklore of the Estate; historical re-enactment days, themed seminars, walks and presentations.
The research will also identify features at risk, and enable action to be taken in association with appropriate government and professional bodies. The ongoing physical evaluation of the Estate will also enable issues regarding access for the less able to be addressed, and work with the local council to upgrade and maintain suitable pathways is a critical facet to the project: the Estate being the site of both a Young Disabled Unit and centre for the Riding for the Disabled.
By active dissemination and the inclusive nature of the St Ives Project, the Friends of St Ives aim to provide better access to an insight into the currently under-utilised resource of a fascinating and little researched landscape.
